Help Me Figure Out

which of these albums to go for first. These are the discs I missed in '04, but I've gotten interested in during all the year-end fussing:

Darren Hayes -- The Tension and the Spark
De La Soul -- The Grind
MIA/Diplo -- Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1 [I liked Florida, but I'm only so-so on "Galang"]
A Girl Called Eddy -- s/t
Michael Mayer -- Touch
Saint Etienne -- Travel Edition, 1990-2005
Bark Psychosis -- Codename: Dustsucker [despite BP's Hex being an earlier pick of the week for me]
William Shatner -- Has Been

So what should I spent my post-holiday money on, and what should I put in the over-hyped/avoid pile?

Darren Hayes. Definitely. Great album, wish I'd brought it home with me for the holidays. If you do get it, let me know and I'll tell you how I'd Playing God it.

Whether you enjoy the Shatner probably depends on whether you have, up 'til now, found him amusing or annoying (I found him amusing, and hence I love the album). Lemon Jelly does help on a track, so maybe that's some motivation for you to tide you over until the new LJ album shows up.

Everyone I know who's heard the De La album has loved it...though I heard one track and was a bit, um, underwhelmed.

That's all I got.

A Girl Called Eddy is excellent. Gorgeous, really.

A bit unsure about what I've heard from the MIA/Diplo cd, but the Diplo mix of "Sunshowers" is ace. Really looking forward to the actual album...

Obviously, I think the Darren Hayes is tremendous, one of the year's biggest surprises, if you don't believe me, believe Ian and Todd B.

A Girl Called Eddy is really very pretty indeed, but if you're not in the mood for slow, gorgeous things, it can actually be a chore to listen to. Maybe more of an autumn album.

I'd avoid the Shatner - the Pulp cover is extraordinary, but the rest of it... nah.

New Year '05 is your time to learn to love Saint Etienne. It's really very easy, that should be your purchase.

It must be an American thing -- I've never heard a single Saint Etienne track, but they sound like a group I'd enjoy.

It looks like Hayes and SE are in the lead, but A Girl Called Eddy is close behind. Let's see how far I can stretch the budget...
